Drone, part 1 “So… what do you do?” The brown desert lizard slowly turned his face toward mine, gazing toward my eyes as if looking straight through them. “I do whatever you wish me to do.” I pondered this for a moment, thinking of whether those words were literal or if he was just offering some services to me so I would feel comfortable. It had been a while since I had felt comfortable. With a soft sigh, I looked back to Morph, who glanced back at me with an expression that I couldn’t quite read. Cursing my Asperger’s Syndrome, I laid my hands in my lap and crossed my feet at the ankles, returning my gaze to this new creature. “What do you mean, you do whatever I wish for you to do?” The lizard made a soft, emotionless chuckle. “I am a simple drone, programmed for obedience, though my top priorities are in protection and comfort. I have been deployed for you, Lurdanjo, to help you during your time of discomfort.” I leaned back in my chair, feeling my heart racing and my blood pumping harder. This had been the first time I had heard the term “drone” in the TXR Worlds before. Many preferred the word “anthroid”, or simply “droid”. I had to know the difference, though I realized I already knew them subconsciously. “Why do you just call yourself a Drone? I’ve heard other terms used to describe lifelike robots, like ‘anthroid’. Is there something special about you?” “I am not special, but merely factory-line, equipped to get a job done. I am only a machine, now sent to watch over you in your difficult time. It was figured that no emotion would be more comforting to you. I will obey any order you wish me to follow, and I will accept anything you wish to do to me. My fate is of no consequence. I am disposable and can be rebuilt, and my successors will be stronger, smarter, and better at serving my purpose than I am. That is why you can do with me as you please.” I sighed a little, constricting my legs together a little more firmly. I looked across his very smooth, organic-quality brown colored scales. “Well, you do seem kinda mindless.” “Yes, because I am just a machine, a computer, a tool. I am meant to be used, or I would not have worth. If I cannot have worth, then I logically should not exist.” “Why DO you exist?” The lizard blinked slowly, still looking and moving exactly as if it were alive, though it kept its gentle, soothing somewhat monotonous voice. “I was hastily created for your service only a half hour ago. Our minds are simple to manufacture, and they do not change. I am a learning computer, but I do not feel. My only job now is to comfort you. That is why you may do whatever you wish with me, for I will not feel any pain, or ever judge you. I simply… will be.” |
